Mercifully, Summer is bearing down on us all and nothing means summer for us like John’s Drive-In in Nags Head, North Carolina. John’s literally sits one sand dune away from the ocean along Nags Head’s beach road and is one good hurricane away from being in the breakers. The place is a relic from an era when the Outer Banks was nothing but a giant sand dune filled with ex-patriot mainlanders, surfers and miscreants. It’s somehow managed to survive the tourist onslaught, the construction of giant box stores selling beer bongs and rebel flag rafts and even the proliferation of the dreaded “OBX” sticker without changing a thing in its repertoire. Each day (when they are open) you’ll find local house painters, barefoot surfers, soaking wet kids and bewildered tourists lined up to get the goods. We’ll be in the line every chance we get jockeying for a post-surf session dolphin boat and chocolate-peanut butter milkshake. Come join us. 3716 Virginia Dare Trail, North Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
