Welcome Takahito Sakai

We’re oh-so-pleased to welcome Takahito Sakairi to the HB Ambassador ranks. Hailing from the Chiba Prefecture of Japan, Takahito is a stylin’ longboarder we first met at MexiLogFest. We were drawn in by his permanent smile and ever-joyful demeanor and kindness. After a few hangs, we learned all about his badass jewelry making side hustle and his daily angling to fill up his dinner table. Takahito is a magnetic dude and an incredible addition to the Howler ranks.  We caught up with him recently so we could all learn a little more about him and welcome him to the squad.

Where on earth are you today?

I am currently in Yokosuka, Japan.

My family home is in Yokosuka City, where I lived until three years ago. The town's atmosphere is wonderful—the blend of nature and the city is incredibly pleasant. The downtown area features a U.S. Navy base, creating an interesting mix of American culture and the atmosphere of a Japanese port town.

Three years ago, I moved alone to Chiba. Now, I live a life where I can surf, fish, and make jewelry.

When you look out your window what do you see?

From the window, you can see Mount Fuji and the sea of Sagami Bay.

We love watching your grace and style on a longboard.  How did you get started and who are some of your influences in the sport?

My father is a surfer, and I wanted to ride the waves too. That's what got me started surfing. He rode a single-fin longboard, so I naturally picked up that board and started riding waves.

I became hooked on it right away. As I watched California surf movies, I developed an admiration for Joel Tudor, Ryan Burch, and others. I wanted to surf in the actual California surf culture, so when I was 21, I studied abroad in San Diego for a year and a half. Studying was important, but more than that, I really enjoyed surfing every day. It was truly a surfing study abroad. My time in San Diego, California, became the most stimulating and foundational period of my surfing life.

As you know, we love all kinds of music here at Howler Brothers. Can you give us 3 or 4 recommendations for Japanese artists we should know?

You spend a lot of time fishing for your dinner. What’s your favorite catch and how do you prepare it?

Fishing is the most fun! I love lure fishing. I enjoy walking around when fishing, searching for the right terrain and time of day where the fish are. I often fish alone, intuitively sensing the fish and the sea! I love fishing for flounder and sea bass on the surf, squid fishing, rockfish, and fish like sweetfish!

When can we get you to Austin, Texas?

I'll come see you guys in 2026 😁
