TIPS TO CARE(A) FOR A MONSTERA FROM HOWLER HQ’S PLANT SPECIALIST
The greenery around HQ and our shops doesn’t keep itself alive. That’s where Rachel comes in. She’s the plant whisperer responsible for keeping our indoor jungle thriving. Since we’re partial to a good Monstera around here, we asked her for a few tips on keeping one happy. Here they are in her words. Thanks, Rachael!
“Monsteras are fast-growing plants that thrive in bright light, well-draining soil, and warm temperatures. They also benefit from regular fertilization!
My Care Tips:
Place the plant in a warm, brightly lit room. Without enough light, stems can become "leggy," and leaves may stay small without producing their iconic split holes.
Water slowly and deeply every 7–10 days, or whenever the top two inches of soil feel dry. Allow the plant to dry out between waterings and avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Reduce watering frequency during the fall and winter.
Wipe the leaves weekly with a damp cloth. Clean leaves allow the plant to breathe better and absorb more light.
Use a moss pole or bamboo stakes to encourage vertical growth and save floor space. Without training, Monsteras tend to spread outward and produce smaller leaves.
Rotate the plant regularly to ensure even growth and strengthen the stems, as they naturally grow toward the light.
With proper care, a Monstera can live for up to 40 years, making it a wonderful heirloom plant.”
